New rules on car windscreen and window tint from 1st of November 2014

Starting from 1st of November 2014, a new regulation on tinting for car windscreens and windows will be enforced by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Malaysia. Also commonly known as the Road Transport Department (RTD) in English.

According to JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the new regulation would set the permitted Visible Light Transmission (VLT) for the rear windscreen and rear passenger windows at 30 per cent, down from the current 50 per cent. The VLT for the front windscreen and the driver's window remains at 70 per cent and 50 per cent, he added.

"The regulations are in line with the international standard adopted in many other countries," he told reporters after a meeting with enforcement officers and motor vehicle inspectors in the southern zone here.

The new regulation was applicable to all vehicles in the country, including imported ones.

Under the Motor Vehicle Rules (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) 1991, offenders (motorists who failed to observe the new regulation) are subjected to face a penalty of:
1. A fine of up to RM 500.00 or a two-week jail sentence for the first offence; and
2. A fine of up to RM 1000.00, or a one-month jail sentence, or both, for subsequent offences.

However, an exemption was given to vehicles used by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Paramount Ruler, King), Sultans, Yang di-Pertua Negeri (literally the "head of state" in Malay), Perdana Menteri (Prime Minister), Timbalan Perdana Menteri (Deputy Prime Minister), Chief Ministers (Ketua Menteri), Great Ministers (Menteris Besar), Chief Justice, as well as those belonging to enforcement bodies such as the police and customs department.

The exemption was given for the safety of the individuals as well as for enforcement staff to carry out high-risk crime-prevention operations.

  3. I honestly had no idea that the rules of tinting car windows changed last year. One of my really good friends is wanting to tint his windows, and I am pretty sure he does not know about these regulations either. It would not be good for him to tint his windows, and then have to change them to fit the rules. I'll make sure I let him know about this next time I see him. Thanks for the help. http://www.suncontrolmn.com

  4. I've been thinking about getting some window tinting on my car. I don't think I need it to dark, but enough to keep the sun out of my eyes. I'll be sure to follow the tinting laws, because I'd rather not have to be fined 500 dollars or spend any time in jail. Thanks for the heads up. http://www.tintcenter.com.au/services
